TODAY’S ACTION: Reunite the families & say no to internment camps!

Call, email, or send a resistbot text to your senators and reps to ask them what they are going to do to reunite the parents and children already separated. The executive order did nothing to address the almost 3,000 kids in custody. Also ask how long we will be imprisoning the families together? The continued use of internment camps is inhumane!

https://www.vox.com/2018/6/20/17485488/executive-order-immigration-trump-families-together

Also, North Dakota residents, know who you are voting for. There is a significant difference between Kevin Cramer and Heidi Heitkamp. It’s the differences between kids and families in cages and no cages.  From the cnn article: “Kevin Cramer volunteered support on Wednesday for chain-link fences in facilities where the government is detaining migrant children, comparing their use to playgrounds and ballparks.”

TODAY’S ACTIONS: Keep the pressure up!

TODAY’S ACTIONS:
1. Keep calling Hoeven about keeping families together. Ask him what he intends to do to end the inhumane practice and reunite the families.  We must keep up the pressure!

TODAY’S ACTION: URGENT – Keep Families Together!

URGENT – WE NEED EVERYONE TO DO THIS TODAY!  Please call John Hoeven and ask him why he isn’t supporting the Keep Families Together Act. What does he think of housing thousands of kids separated from their parents and the harm we are doing them? And call Heidi, Amy and Tina to say thank you!

Wondering what you can do to help?

#1: Keep calling Hoeven and expressing your outrage

#2: Keep posting about this on social media and talking to your friends about how wrong it is that the government is separating families.

#3: Donate and/or volunteer to organizations that help immigrants and refugees.

TODAY’S ACTION: #Where are the children?

Please call your senators and ask them to support Sen. Tina Smith’s HELP Act “that would protect the safety and well-being of minor children who have been left alone and vulnerable after their parents have been arrested or detained by U.S. immigration authorities.”

https://www.smith.senate.gov/content/sen-tina-smith-leads-23-senators-calling-protect-minor-children-left-alone-when-parents-are

Secondly, here are more ways to help (“From attorneys Kara Lynum (Twitter handle @karalynum), Brian Aust (@austlawyer) and Ana Pottraz Acosta (@apottratzacosta) kindly hosted an informational gathering to explain the recent policy shift by the administration regarding separating children from parents at the border, the reports of 1,500 missing children, and what people can do”):

1) Money
Not always super fun, but it’s one of the best things possible things you can do.

LOCALLY
Advocates for Human Rights runs a 1-800 number for detained mothers being released from custody, provides legal representation to asylum-seekers and children seeking immigration status in the United States.

Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota runs a detention hotline for detained immigrants in Minnesota and was able to add two attorneys to their deportation defense capacity because of donations.

NATIONALLY
Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas (receives immigrants after they are released from ICE custody and provides housing and legal services): They have an Amazon wish list , where they’re asking for things like paper and toner, easy items!

2) Volunteer
Advocates for Human Rights (needs all types of volunteers, seeing increased caseload of labor trafficking victims and asylum seekers):

Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota needs all types of volunteers.

3) Political Action
Contact your member of Congress. They will tally your calls, doesn’t have to be long. Just say “I’m against family separation” – same as what we did re. health care. Ask for oversight of CRB and HHS. They need to know we care about this.

SCRIPT: I am against separation for families. Please conduct oversight on CBP, ICE and Health and Human Services. Please hold hearings and write letters to the agencies asking questions.

This week’s actions for ND residents:

  1. Doug Burgum at 701-328-2200 to keep net neutrality in our state. http://kfgo.com/podcasts/news-views-with-joel-heitkamp/2615/legislative-candidate-and-tech-entrepreneur-brandon-medenwald-on-preserving-net-neturality-1/#

This week’s actions for MN residents:
From WatchYourRepsMN:
1. A bill that circumvents the process used to determine if pipelines are necessary and in the best interests of Minnesotans as passed committee in the Senate and is waiting for a full floor vote. It would immediately terminate the process the Enbridge Line 3 replacement is going through and allow for immediate construction along their preferred route which has been deemed a detriment to Minnesota by a judge. Please call your senators and say NO to SF3510.
Kent Eken: (651) 296-3205 or email: sen.kent.eken@senate.mn

2. Apparently Rep Sarah Anderson has added language to a funding bill (I don’t have the bill number yet) to allow some pretty crazy gerrymandering (they could draw maps around an incumbent’s address!). Sign the petition from Common Cause Minnesota and call Anderson at 651-296-5511 to say “no thanks”

TODAY’S ACTION: Hold Facebook and Cambridge Analytica accountable!

Please call/email/text your reps today to request that they hold Facebook and Cambridge Analytica accountable for the massive data breach! Our data is too easily available for hackers to steal and in this case, Facebook seems to have just given Trump’s team 50 million users data!

“They say ‘trust us,’ but Mark Zuckerberg needs to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about what Facebook knew about misusing data from 50 million Americans in order to target political advertising and manipulate voters,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said in a statement.

Also send Facebook a message or tweet about it to have them hold themselves accountable for fixing the problem in the future and issuing an apology.

TODAY’S ACTION: Protect Election Integrity

This was posted on the Indivisible Allies of Minnesota Facebook page and I’m sharing it as I think it’s very important for the upcoming November elections.

Securing Our Elections
Representative Tulsi Gabbard has introduced HR 5147, Securing Our Elections Act. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/5147
This bill asks for emergency funding to make sure every state can adopt a paper ballot voting system that can be audited to ensure the integrity of our elections. We have until the end of March to get this through if we want it to apply to November’s midterm elections.

Please call your reps to ask them to support this bill to ensure election integrity.

MN Residents Action:

MN Residents – Important action today! I’m copying this over from Indivisible Allies of Minnesota (please like and follow them as well).
Let’s go local today, folks. Our Minnesota legislature is up and running and the GOP controlled Congress will try to get their agenda through in a hurry.
Today the MN House will hold hearings on two bills that affect Minnesota’s health insurance marketplace, MNSure. Remember when Trump attempted to sabotage the Affordable Care Act by essentially eliminating the advertising budget, reducing the sign up time, and removing mandates? MNSure sheltered us from much of that nonsense. Now Republicans are trying to attack our insurance at the state level.

HF2725 Instead of MNSure, the statewide health insurance market, this bill would give each county money to come up with their own insurance solution. This will lead to a patchwork of different insurance coverages. This bill will make Minnesota’s insurance more complicated and more expensive.
The Government Operations and Elections Policy Committee will have a hearing today, at 10:15 am, so get your calls and emails in ASAP. Here is a list of the committee members. If your representative is on this committee, call or email him/her. Otherwise, you can contact the committee chair, Tim O’Driscoll

http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/comm/committeemembers.asp?comm=90011
HF3543 This bill caps the amount of fees MNSure can collect to 25% more than they collected in 2012. Since MNSure uses the fees to pay for operating expenses, this bill will attenuate MNSure’s ability to provide service to its customers.
The Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee will hold a hearing on this bill today at 3 pm. Here is a list of the committee members. If your representative is on this committee, call or email him/her. Otherwise you can contact the committee chair, Joe Hoppe.
